IVF cost in the UK
Some NHS-funded IVF is available in the UK, but eligibility criteria and the number of funded cycles vary a great deal depending on where you live, so two people in different areas can be offered very different amounts of help. Most people end up paying for at least part of their treatment privately, either at an NHS clinic's private wing or at a fully private clinic. Clinics usually advertise a headline price for one cycle of treatment, but medication, additional tests, embryo freezing and storage are commonly billed as separate items rather than being folded into that figure. It is worth asking whether the price you have been quoted is the whole cost or a starting point.
We do not publish an average price for the UK, because any single figure would be a guess and would go out of date. Use the questions below to get an itemised quote in writing from the clinic itself. Currency here is Pound sterling (GBP).
What drives the cost
- The dose and type of stimulation medication you need, which depends on your age, weight and ovarian reserve
- Whether ICSI is used instead of standard IVF
- Whether embryos are tested before transfer (PGT)
- Freezing and ongoing storage of eggs or embryos
- How many transfers are included, and whether frozen transfers are charged separately
- Extra monitoring scans and blood tests beyond the standard schedule
- Optional add-on treatments the clinic offers alongside the core cycle

- Initial consultation and treatment plan
- Baseline scans and bloods to plan the cycle
- Egg collection procedure
- Fertilisation and embryo culture in the lab
- One fresh embryo transfer
Usually billed on top
- Stimulation and trigger medication
- ICSI, if needed rather than standard fertilisation
- Embryo freezing and each year of storage after that
- Frozen embryo transfer cycles
- PGT or other embryo testing
- Additional scans if your cycle needs closer monitoring
- Donor sperm or eggs, and associated donor screening
- Optional add-ons such as assisted hatching or endometrial scratch
